I'm Batman

Dear Diary,

My first memory is watching the ‘89 Tim Burton classic, Batman, in the theater. Specifically that scene where Batman picks up that goon and s’all, “I want you to tell all your friends about me.”

“WHAT ARE YOU??”

He pulls him in close like he’s either gonna kiss him passionately or bite his head off, “I’m Batman.”

That was the coolest shit. My first word was Batman. I still have my Halloween costume from that year. A cape and cowl. I know exactly where it is. I have so many Batman tattoos.

Funny thing is, I’ve only read a handful of the comics. It’s interesting, a character that’s been around for almost a century. I’ve read some great Batman stories and some… real stinkers, lol. Obviously, I have an infinity for sequential art, but I find the whole process of creating some multidimensional epic crossover event story every decade or so to keep the characters from aging kinda tedious.

Anyway, the Alamo Drafthouse was playing Batman so I bought tickets, like, three weeks ago. I took Gurpreet. Awesome seats. Enjoyed the little presentation Alamo Drafthouse creates for their features, which included a couple of promos that appeared at the beginning of my VHS tape I had, growing up.

This really large guy occupied the seat next to me. Which was only unnerving cuz he came in right at the movie started and was really loud, “is this where i sit? Oh wow, look at this. How is anyone supposed to sit in these? Haha! I’m an old man so my loud ignorance to watching a movie in a public setting is charming, right??”

Still, I was immediately transfixed by the film. I wept during the opening credits and squeezed Gurpreet’s hand like a 5 year old, barely able to sit still in my seat.

I tell ya, the films holds up. I enjoyed it. And, as always, caught stuff I hadn’t caught during the dozens of viewings on home media. Wow. It was amazing.

About 30 minutes before the film ended, the big fella next to me tried to get out of his chair… and couldn’t. He was there with a friend so I figured if the fella was in an emergency, his buddy would help him…? He ended up calling the fella who brought us our food during the film. If you’re unfamiliar with Alamo Drafthouse, they bring you food during the film…. Lol, I just said that, but you press this little button and teenagers run around and get stuff for you. It’s pretty cool. I guess they can also be wrangled in to helping you out of your chair. I found the whole thing only a little comical, mostly sad. I wanted to help but the only thing I thought to do was use my foot to push that fella’s old, fat ass out of his chair and maybe that wasn’t the kinda help which Batman is needed…

We got back to Joplin after 10pm on a Wednesday and I have no regrets. Wore my 1988 Batman tshirt. Drove an hour to watch a 35 year old movie… oh, god, that just hit me, lol. Had a good meal. Even the drive was fine and mostly uneventful. I’ll have to keep my eyes open for if they ever play Batman Returns.
